According to police investigation, the teacher's legal wife followed her husband after becoming suspicious of his activities. She sought assistance from the Tagum City Police to confirm her suspicions.

It is believed that the two went directly to a known VVIP Guest House where they were caught in a compromising situation. The Tagum PNP identified the teacher as Alias Mario, 44 years old, married, and a Public School Teacher at Tagum National Trade School. His female companion was identified as Alias Joy, 46 years old, also married to a foreign husband and a bar owner.
