In a swift and dramatic turn of events, police have arrested two teenage suspects in connection with the brutal murder of 21-year-old UP Manila student Sophia Coquilla, whose lifeless body was found in her bedroom on July 9, bearing 38 stab wounds.

In an unsettling break of day in Tagum City, law enforcers acted swiftly to apprehend two teenage suspects just 24 hours after a shocking crime shook the local community. The operation, conducted early on July 10, 2025, led police to a boarding house where the suspects were found allegedly in possession of the victim's stolen belongings—offering chilling clues in a case that has now gripped the nation.

The Crime and Victim

On July 9 at around 5 AM, the quiet home of the Coquilla family was broken into and turned into a gruesome crime scene. Sophia Coquilla, a student of the University of the Philippines Manila, was found lifeless in her bedroom on the second floor, with 38 stab wounds. Two unlikely murder weapons—a dumbbell and a grasscutter—were discovered near her body, hinting at a violent struggle.

The Investigation and Arrest

Under the command of Police Colonel Alexander Serrano, Jr., the Davao del Norte Provincial Police Office (DNPPO), in coordination with Tagum City Police, launched a rapid operation that led them to a nearby boarding house. Inside, they recovered several personal items believed to have been stolen from Sophia, including:

  • An Apple laptop

  • An iPad

  • A damaged iPhone

  • Two wristwatches

Blood-stained blades—a butterfly knife and a kitchen knife—were also found at the scene. Police confirmed a witness had guided them in locating the suspects, strengthening the case against the accused.

Ongoing Manhunt and Legal Proceedings

Two other suspects remain at large as the investigation continues. Meanwhile, the arrested teenagers are being held at the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD), while physical evidence is undergoing documentation by the General Investigation Section.

In a public statement, Col. Serrano emphasized, “This operation is a clear demonstration of DNPPO’s swift and unwavering commitment to justice. We will not rest until all those responsible are held accountable.”

Family Ties and Official Reaction

Sophia was the niece of Tagum City Councilor Engr. Agripino "Jun" Coquilla, Jr. Her tragic death has rattled the community and sparked outrage on social media. Authorities have classified the case as robbery with homicide, underscoring the violent and opportunistic nature of the crime.
