75 Filipino Peacekeepers 'Greatest Escape' from Syrian Rebels
Lt. Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. said that the Filipino peacekeepers made an intelligent decision and successfully escaped from life threatening crisis at Position 68. Though they were able to hold their post for around seven hours, they opted to retreat for their safety. The group started to move away from their camp around 7p.m and reached the base camp of the Philippines situated in Ziouani.
In earlier reports, the Filipino soldiers purportedly refused to surrender their firearms to the rebels which resulted to a standoff at Position 68 around 11a.m. yesterday.
While the 75 Filipino UN peacekeepers are in safe condition, 43 Fijian troops are still being held captives by the Syrian rebels.
