'Feast of the Black Nazarene'?, any Biblical basis?

By: jayleen in Culture

No classes in Manila, January 9, for the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo. This will mean another day of rest for majority of Manila employees, teachers and students. While it sounds to be good, I can’t contain the feeling of being annoyed after watching the news that as early as yesterday, Quiapo Church up to Quirino Grandstand in Luneta already has packed of devotees camped outside, ready to vigil in order to get a sure chance to thank, kiss and pray to their patron saint “the black nazarene” on its feast day tomorrow. Some even brought replicas of “the black nazarene”. This event really saddens me. Seriously, I don’t want to pick fights in this post but I just want to be honest and blunt enough to share something that some of us can ponder.

I graduated elementary and high school from a Catholic School. Back then, I have tried questioning some of the beliefs and traditions that devoted Catholics do practice, like having different images where devotees would caress, wipe, kiss and bow down to their patron saint/s. They would pray and thank their patron saint/s for the answered prayers. They would sweat it out just to show their sincerest devotion to it. Worst, they would even call these images as “God” himself. As a Christian, It challenged me to understand that these are all unbiblical beliefs, teachings and traditions that have been passed on from generation to generation.

I remember way back from our Christian Living class in 4th grade the story of “The Golden Calf” wherein our teacher taught us not to create any form of images or idols made by human hands out of gold, silver or anything to be worshiped and be called god because God hates idolatry. I asked about her stand in praising and worshiping graven images/statues of different saints in the Catholic churches and that some even bow down to such as these. And she said with all honesty, these are wrong doings of some Catholic people because the images/statues are there as a representation but not to the point of worshiping these man-made graven images. This is something that must be told because a lot of people are having misconceptions in praying and believing to these graven images to aid, guide and give them life miracles. For instance, some Catholic devotees would even teach their children to show respect to these graven images by kissing and wiping the graven image with their hands or hanky. And pray and ask for healing, which sometimes this act might be harmful more than helpful to them since thousands of people are touching and kissing that same graven image of a saint, so chances are you might get infected of a viral infection or a contagious disease. Now, you are more than at risk instead of getting healed. Then you will question God why instead of healing you from sickness your health condition worsen.

Devotees, let it be known that God abhors those who bow down and worship to any images or idols. And He detests anyone who misuses His name. (Go check God’s ten (10) Commandments in Exodus 20 specifically God’s first 3 commandments)

1. You shall have no other gods before me.
2. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

This was also stated in Psalm 135:15-18 where it says:

“The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by
human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear,
nor is there breath in their mouths. Those who make them
will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.”

It’s about time to stop these foolish acts. Let’s wake up, open up our minds and hasten to what is true. Seek the truth! Read the bible…

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:32

We wouldn't want our children and our children’s children to worship idols and suffer eternal separation from God in hell. Our God is a jealous God and wouldn't want us to worship any other god before Him. God has given us life. God is the one who formed and created us. God alone deserves to be praised, worshiped and bowed down by His creations. It is God who blesses and who heals, not some form of graven image or a statue that we called saint or god. God is a spiritual being and cannot be represented by any form of images, as we are called to be like Him, He wants us to worship Him not by flesh but in spirit and in truth.

I’ll end this post by leaving these bible verses:

“God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit  and in truth." — John 4:24

"Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16’
