Strange Behavior: Woman literally Eats her House

By: Abielle in Lifestyle

Nicole, 26 years old, from Detroit Michigan is a single parent and she’s addicted to eating dry-wall. She says she’s literally eating her house. Nicole has been addicted to eating dry-wall for over seven years.

It all started innocently with just a bite from a piece of chalk. Then over the times she switched from eating chalk to dry-wall since she says that dry-wall tastes better than chalk to her. Now, Nicole takes on feeding dry-wall for up to six times a day. She loves the texture, the taste, the smell and basically everything about dry wall. Nicole gets dry wall wherever she could find it; her house, her friend’s house, and sometimes her grandmother’s house.

She eats about a handful block of dry wall a day and eats about a square foot of dry-wall a week. That’s over one thousand square feet in seven years.

She shows TLC a hole in her wall which she’s been picking for two months which looks like you could fit a ball in it. She takes a piece, breaks it, takes a bite, then eats it. That easy!

She shows TLC different kinds of dry walls and mentions that there are different tastes to each one.

Just like the woman who eats rocks, Nicole may have what is called the Pica disorder which is characterized by an appetite for substances largely non-nutritive, such as ice, clay, chalk, dirt, or sand.

According to DSM-IV criteria, for these actions to be considered pica, they must persist for more than one month at an age where eating such objects is considered developmentally inappropriate, not part of culturally sanctioned practice and sufficiently severe to warrant clinical attention. – Wikipedia

Geophagy, on the other hand, is the practice of eating earthy or soil-like substances such as clay, and chalk. It exists in animals in the wild and also in humans, most often in rural or preindustrial societies among children and pregnant women. Human geophagy may be related to pica, a classified eating disorder in the DSM-IV characterized by abnormal cravings for nonfood items. – Wikipedia
