Tintin Bersola-Babao on "Being Gay" article draws criticisms

Tintin Bersola-Babao attempted to discuss a delicate topic in the daily morning show, Good Morning Club, which she co-host daily on TV5.

The article that Tintin Bersola published in Philstar has drawn the ire of netizens. But she said, "It was a sensitive topic handled with care."

Tintin Bersola-Babao also invited a psychologist, Dr. Camille Garcia, to help them tackle the "gayness" topic.

She elaborated that her co-hosts shared the same view:

That gayness is not a plague. That if one of our sons turns out to be gay, we were unanimous in saying that “We shall accept and love our sons just the same, just as much.”

But what stirred the netizens' fury regarding the "Being Gay" episode of Good Morning Club?

Tintin's discussion in her article started with simple questions:

What are the early signs? I’ve read that when a two- or three-year-old plays with girl’s toys, that doesn’t necessarily mean he is gay since that is just the “curiosity phase.” Is this true? At what age will the signs of true “gayness” come out?

But along the discussion, she asked questions that were descriminative in nature.

Should parents be alarmed and arrest the situation? Or encourage it?

How should the parents address this? Some parents resort to threat and extreme military-style punishment. Some parents go to great lengths to explain to the child the consequences of being gay, so that the child can think, then make a choice.

Why is being gay still considered a shame for conservative families, even now that we are living in modern times that gays are accepted in our society? Gays (both male and female) are contributing well to our society, in different professional fields.

Is being gay really a lifestyle choice? Or genetically influenced?

To summarize the trigger points, netizens went ballistic with the following terms/phrases.

1. encourage it - netizens responded that being gay is not something you can "encourage" or "discourage". It's a human state that occurs without encouragement/discouragement.
2. consequences of being gay - for netizens its a threat, a negative connotation, and a statement of discrimination
3. make a choice - again, they said being gay is not a choice but a natural state that happens in the animal kingdom
4. being gay,...a shame for conservative families - a straight forward discrimination and a state alienating gays in the basic institution of the society
5. gay...lifestyle choice - just like the answer of #1 & #3

However, since this country is dominated by Christians and 'God-fearing' people, the moral standards of the society prevail. Thousands of Filipinos are still not open to accept gays as part of the society.

Now as the administrator of this site, if you would ask my standpoint regarding this matter -- I have a simple answer.

Gay exists! Give respect! They are part of the society! Let them live that way.

Equal rights and equal opportunities for them because being gay won't make them less of a human.

And to those people who attacked Tintin Bersola-Babao regarding this 'Gayness" article:

Try not to be sensitive enough. Based on my assessment, maybe Tintin just ran out of politically correct terms and phrases.
