957 Death Toll blamed to Cagayan de Oro local goverment

National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) chief Benito Ramos is blaming CDO local goverment officials for the high number of fatalities from tropical storm Sendong."Unang-una, abiso sa kanila signal number 2, Northern Mindanao kasama Central Visayas. They were forewarned. Ang mga kababayan alam ang landslide-prone area at flood-prone area. Nangyari ito sa riverbank. With due respect sa mga local na pamahalaan, mukhang may pagkukulang pa rin (sila) sa response," he said.

Cagayan de Oro Mayor Vicente Emano however commented "This is not the time to blame. The people in the area have been residing there for more than 50 years, and we are not blaming the national government for this tragedy".

Benito's statement isn't new to all of us. This happens all the times and this may happen over and over again. Filipinos are very good at fingerpointing. We like to blame someone else thinking that it would grant a good reputation in return.

Why are these people acting like that?

1. Politically driven. The battle of political factions in the Philippines is a never ending story. We always see black propaganda especially after the election. Every political party wants to embarrass their opposing party.

2. Crab mentality. People wants to show that they are better while pulling down some else asses. They want to prove that they are smarter over the other. Whenever Pacquiao has a fight everyone is a boxing analyst, during NBA championships all of the Filipinos are basketball analyst, in times of global recession all of us are economist, etc.

3. They want to be the hero. In basketball, during crucial moments almost all of the players wants to enter the hard court and make the final shot. This is what we are. We always want to be highlighted. We want all of the people to bow down and praise us. Hail to the King!

4. Hopeless people. Individuals who are losing hope in their lives are the ones who like to blame the most. When these people failed to have personal progress they would rather discourage others not to do anything good. In other words, losers wants more people to join them.

I know all of these things because I am a Filipino. However, I want to change these behaviors while retaining my native blood.
