RIP Sen. Miriam Santiago (1945-2014) | Fake or Real
Manila, Philippines – The famous Senator Miriam Santiago, who hailed from the province of Iloilo, allegedly died after being diagnosed with a stage four lung cancer. The news immediately spread in various social media on Thursday, July 10, 2014.
The report regarding the sudden death of the Senator was posted under the subdomain of news-report.pw. It also include the message “We Love You, You will be Forever missed” and with a banner that says “RIP Sen. Miriam Santiago 1945-2014“. The page is well-crafted but we don’t like you to visit the website, so we decided to include the screenshot of its landing page(see the image below).
Some of you might already have a clue on why we are stopping you from visiting the page. DH.com doesn’t promote webpages which contain fake and bogus reports. To our valued followers and readers, the said news report is just a hoax! Senator Santiago is not dead.
There could be a lot of questions running in your head. We would like to address one of those questions on this post. Let’s unmask the hidden agenda of the registrant of this domain.
1. “news-report.pw” is a newly-registered domain. In fact, it was created on July 9, 2014.
2. The root domain is empty–no default page at all.
3. The person behind this bogus news report made a subdomain “senado” to make it look real and reliable to its audience.
4. Then they created a simple HTML page that mimics the design or theme of Facebook.
5. A javascript has been inserted to display the video that will prompt the reader/viewer to share the video on Facebook.
Now, will you be able to play the video after sharing it? Don’t get frustrated. Don’t be fooled! It won’t play the video, no matter how many shares you make on Facebook. This viral hoax applied a similar technique and strategy used in the shocking catfight of two N$k&d girls. It’s ultimate goal is to drive millions of visitors to generate a revenue.
DH.com made a code inspection of the script and we found a clever code injected in the page. Instead of getting the video, you will be redirected to this URL:
clkmon.com/adServe/static/rdr.html?tid=XXSCRDRCT <<<< This is where the website owner generates huge income. Thus, you better stop hitting the play button.
Again, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago is not dead!!!
If you don’t like your friends to be the next victims of this hoax, share this post to them immediately.
