The Cagayan de Oro city police office raised the security alert of the city this week due to the bomb threats at the city hall and the threats that City Mayor Oscar Moreno has been receiving since last week. But it didn't stop the unidentified suspects from detonating a bomb in the city's most popular mall center.

An improvised bomb exploded in a restaurant at Lim Ket Kai center, the pride of Cagayan de Oro, on late Friday night which killed six (6) people. The incident also injured 46 people, the SunStar reports.

Cagayan de Oro police chief Graciano Mijares said the bombing occured in front of Kyla's Bistro in Limketkai Mall where Misamis Oriental board member Roldan Lagbas and some medical representatives attended a convention of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians in the city. Several customers were also watching a live band performance when the loud blast echoed in Limketkai Center. Roldan Lagbas,44, was among the three restaurant customers who were killed on the spot while three others died at a hospital, Mijares said. The identities of the other fatalities, including those injured, are yet to be known.

Lieutenant Colonel Leo Bongosia, spokesman of the Army's 6th Infantry Division, said personnel from the Army's Explosive and Ordnance Disposal and K9 units immediately responded to the scene, along with police personnel, for crime scene investigation. Bomb fragments were recovered as far as 50 meters (yards) away from a table believed to have been where the device was placed, said Mijares.

City Vice Mayor Ian Acenas described the explosion as the worst he ever saw. "Heads holed and brains splattered. The sight is so horrible," he said. Unfortunately, Kyla's Bistro  doesn't have closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, which may have captured what had happened in the vicinity before the bomb explosion.

The Cagayan de Oro Police has created a special investigation task force and authorities have intensified checkpoints across the city. City Mayor Oscar Moreno told ABS-CBN news that the military and justice department agents joined the investigation to establish the motive for the attack and to identify the suspects behind the limketkai center explosion.

"Accordingly the bomb, the blast was near him (Lagbas) but we cannot say it's politically motivated because we'll just speculate," said Lieutenant Colonel Leo Bongosia. "We still [don't] know the motive and the identities of the people behind the explosion of this improvised bomb," the official added.

Meanwhile, the 25-acre Limketkai Center is located within the heart of Cagayan de Oro City in the province of Misamis Oriental. It houses 300 diversified tenants and recognized stores, local boutique shops, fast-food chains and specialty fine-dining restaurants. Limketkai Center is only 7km away from the airport.
